Between 10am and 4pm this Saturday, 7th November, the Laugharne History Society is holding a 'Heritage Day' exhibition in the Millennium Hall, Clifton Street, Laugharne, Carmarthenshire. Portal member and contributor PAB is giving a short presentation on the various Standing Stones in the Laugharne area, hoping to get people keen to learn more about what the Portal can offer!

Once they are hooked, PAB will be having the Portal running on a projector in the main hall throughout the day so that visitors can see first hand what a wonderful resource it is. To really impress, 'Sem' and 'Mrs Sem' will also be in attendance - so at least 3 Portal t-shirts should be visible. It would be great if any other Portal members could introduce themselves if they can get along!

The Heritage Day isn't aimed only (or even primarily) at things megalithic. There will also be displays on several aspects of Laugharne's heritage such as; Chapels; Church; Cockle-gathering; Brook School, the Town Hall ....:

There will be refreshments available; exhibits from Dyfed Archaeological Trust and books from Carmarthenshire Antiquarians, a help desk to enable you to find out more about your family or house history and opportunities for you to share photos, documents and memories with the History Society.

The timed talks are as follows:

10.10 a.m. Formal opening by John Bradshaw, Portreeve

Minitalks of 10-15 mins in the Committee Room:
10.20 – Bruce Wallace – learning from Tithe Maps
10.50 – Peter Boyle – Standing stones near Laugharne – how to find them, and other treasures
11.20 –. John Bradshaw – Using newspaper archives to find out about the past – e.g. your family or home
11.50 – Jeff Watts: Laugharne’s cockle gatherers.
12.20 – Orchard Park memories – a discussion.
KEYNOTE TALK: (In the main hall)
2 p.m. by Dr Eurwyn Wiliam, RCAHMW Chairman: Welsh Cottages

There is plenty of parking available in the nearby St Martin's Church car park (donations) - the final resting place of Dylan Thomas! The postcode for the church: SA33 4QD.

Heritage Day Laugharne - 7/11/15
Normally 'Heritage Days' leave me a little cold, and the thought of one at Laugharne conjured up images of people eulogising over drunken Welsh poets spouting turgid nonsense. Driving west on the M4 with rain reducing visibility and wind threatening to blow my little Jimny off the road did nothing to lessen my feeling of impending boredom. Even the thought of seeing Dr Eurwyn Wiliam, RCAHMW Chairman, deliver a talk on Welsh cottages boded ill - how much can you say about Welsh cottages? How wrong preconceptions can be and in this case I am more than happy to apologise to anyone involved in the organising and running of Laugharne Heritage Day for my thoughts when prejudging the event.
There were a number of talks given throughout the day and stands showing what various organisations can do for you. The Megalithic Portal's Peter Boyle (pab) gave a well illustrated talk on the stones that can be found near Laugharne and various ways of locating them. This included the use of different Ordnance Survey maps but with a special emphasis on The Portal and how to use it. Peter was then on hand throughout the day to give personal demonstrations to interested members of the public. I'm not sure if Peter kept a tally of the numbers but he seemed to be busy most of the time. Hopefully The Portal will see a growth in members from West Wales. Well done Peter!
Unfortunately I missed the majority of talks as I spent most of my time (along with portal member PJK7009 - hi Phil) talking to James Meek of Dyfed Archaeology Trust. Among other things he was showing off Wales' newly released on-line LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) facility, available to all members of the public without having to register, and with the data free to download for those with the knowledge to use such information. The latter skill still eludes me but I spent a few 'happy hours' playing with it on Saturday night.
All in all a marvellous day out and many thanks to those who put in the time and effort to make it so enjoyable - it's already in my diary for next year. As for Welsh cottages, I found the talk so interesting I spent eighteen quid on the book!
