Ffridd Faldwyn
Ffridd Faldwyn submitted by TimPrevett : The westernmost extremity of the earthworks at Ffridd Faldwyn is at the left of the picture; it clearly shows how the natural contours of the hill were used to aid the siting of the defences. In the far distance is Corndon Hill, on the far east border of Powys into Shropshire. Even further away, to the left of Corndon Hill is The Stiperstones ridge. See main entry for more details. An Oswestry and Borders History and Archaeology Group talk is promoting this forthcoming book by Beth McCormack on the monuments of this northern county of Powys. It is scheduled for Friday 2nd June 2006.

Montgomeryshire has a fascinating history and unique prehistoric landscape with thousands of recorded monuments including ritual complexes, stone rows, cairns and standing stones.

During this 30 minute lecture we will explore:

* Ice Age life in Wales: a Broader Perspective
What stories do the caves tell?
Recent discoveries at Creswell Crags and Cheddar Gorge
* Neolithic and Bronze age ceremonial monuments in Montgomeryshire
What these monuments tell us about human movements
How monuments reflect spirituality and societal structure
* Bronze Age technology:
Montgomeryshire metallurgical innovations that rocked the world
Montgomeryshire at the helm of Welsh hillfort construction
Agriculture comes to Montgomeryshire!
* Iron Age hillforts and a new way of life for Montgomeryshire

These topics will always be placed in context of the magnificent landscape of Montgomeryshire, as it greatly influenced the movements and culture of ancient inhabitants. Overhead pictures will be presented. A discussion with questions will follow, and the book will be available for sale at the conclusion of the evening.

See the OBHAG website for full details, and author biography.

Note: The charge for non OBHAG members is £1; 200+ places available, so no tickets - turn up on the night.

Megalithic Montgomeryshire
Megalithic Montgomeryshire submitted by TimPrevett : Book review coming soon. Megalithic Montgomeryshire by Beth McCormack, Logaston Press. By 7,000 years ago, people were flourishing in the mountains and valleys of Montgomeryshire. They were excellent providers and craftspeople, always at the forefront of Welsh culture.
