Korean City Dusts Off Prehistoric Structures to Attract Tourists

Ichon city government will restore prehistoric dolmens as an attraction for tourists, officials said yesterday.

The nine dolmens in Ichon, some 40km east of Seoul, will be linked with nearby attractions such as a white pine forest, ceramic art village and hot spring resort to form a culture and tourism belt, officials said.

Sejong University Museum has been excavating the dolmens since 1999 and has uncovered other prehistoric relics such as stone axes and earthenware in the area.

The three dolmens in the Suha area, which resemble stone slab tables, most likely served religious purposes and deserve preservation, the excavation team said.

The city government hopes Kyonggi Province will list the three dolmens as provincial cultural assets next year.

"There are hundreds of dolmens in the Sindun and Paeksa areas, so we will need continuous excavation and restoration,'' an official said. Thanks to the Korea Times
