Each day we have the opportunity to learn something new. Fortunately for us, technology has advanced so far that we have access to almost any literature at our fingertips with our mobile devices. At least once a day someone will say “just Google it”! This is exactly why starting an online learning blog is imperative; people are always looking for answers to their questions.

As well as people blogging just for fun, it is becoming increasingly important for businesses to start educational blogs, it can help generate business and attract more customers or clients. Imagine a gym starts a blog and posts weekly articles on tips to lose weight and the health benefits of exercise. Someone on Google searches, “how to lose weight” and the gym’s blog shows up. From there, that person shares the blog on Facebook and their neighbour sees the post. Later that day the neighbour and her husband walk up to the gym and purchase a personal training package - all starting from a simple educational blog! It’s an excellent and inexpensive marketing strategy.

Blogs can become an escape for fears or anxieties as well. It can be easier for people to share their experiences behind a screen where they are more comfortable, rather than speaking in front of a live audience. You can can still address their audience of a thousand or more, leaving behind any hesitancy.

So if you are thinking about starting an educational blog, consider a few things.

* Make sure your content has quality so if someone reads it they can take away a key piece of information and utilize it.
* Try and choose original subjects, or give a new take on an old idea
* Get people engaged by asking thought-provoking questions.
* You must be credible and/ or use credible sources (give them credit) to share informative topics on your blog.
* Be consistent with your posts, it helps to post at the same time on the same day of the week if you can.
* Be sure to brand yourself with a logo, and make your name (and possibly face) known. * Remember that people enjoy looking at photos and illustrations. Use your own, or add copyright free / creative commons images to your advantage.

Don't worry about not having an enormous following from the start. Be resilient and continue to post; people are reading, and you will start to build a following with each post.

Quality educational blogs can be hard to come by these days because almost everyone on social media has one, so it helps a lot if you can pass on information of good quality. Remember that you won't make money straight away, it much more about the knowledge you share to ensure your readers are educated on whatever the subject may be.

With thanks to Hannah Sackett for the illustration, she blogs her artwork at: https://prehistories.wordpress.com and uses it to publicise to her Etsy shop
