the art of liquid painting and its consorts, scott richardWhen it comes to social media influence, creativity is an essential thing to focus on. Whether you’re a brand looking to engage with an audience or simply an individual influencer wanting to create the best content you can, there’s no doubt that creativity is the single most powerful force in helping you to do those things.

It stands to reason, then, that given TikTok’s meteoric rise, it would be the platform where creativity is currently exploding.

So, how exactly is creativity exploding on this new but very much proven social media platform? If you’re a brand, what can you do to shore up some followers, and if you’re an influencer, how can you contribute to this wave of creativity? We’ve got some answers for you. From challenges to lip-syncing and everything in between, TikTok is a real hive of creativity, and we’re there for it. Here’s how creativity is exploding right now on TikTok.

It’s a natural home for challenges

You’ve probably seen some of the challenges people have undertaken on TikTok over the last twelve months. Many of them are strange; some of them are wonderful; still others are perhaps a little dangerous and shouldn’t be replicated at home. Still, if you want to try a challenge for yourself, it’s easy; anyone can do it provided they have basic video equipment and the wherewithal to give it a shot. Challenges are great, home-grown content that make TikTok the place to be for creative types.

It’s a fast-growing social network

When a social media platform is as popular as TikTok, it’s inevitable that the creative will congregate there and contribute their content to the platform. Of course, you need followers before your content is seen by a lot of people. That’s the great conundrum of social media. If you need to bolster your follower count as an influencer, you can try this out; once you’ve got some followers, your creativity will shine just like everyone else’s does.

It encourages individuality

lipsync Though TikTok does nudge its users towards conformity a little with the notion of challenges and other things in which to take part, it’s definitely a platform that encourages individuality in its users. That’s why creativity is exploding right now on TikTok; it’s a place where influencers and brands alike can be themselves, regardless of what the outside world thinks of them. TikTok is the perfect place to express your individuality, which makes it an ideal home for creativity.

Lip-syncing is huge

One way in which many users of TikTok pay tribute to the creativity of others - and express their own into the bargain - is to lip-sync. This involves miming the words to a song you like, posting your own version of it on TikTok to express your individuality. It doesn’t have to be a song, of course; provided that you’re not in breach of copyright, it could be a sequence from a movie or something similar. Lip-syncing is a great way to express yourself on TikTok, and it’s really taken off on the platform in a big way.

Everyone is stuck indoors

The coronavirus crisis is an unprecedented situation in peacetime; it’s causing the entire world to change the way it operates. TikTok isn’t immune to the effects of the virus, either, although it’s had an arguably more positive effect on the platform than it has in other areas. Young people and adults alike are responding to the challenges of the coronavirus by creating new TikTok memes. While everyone’s stuck indoors, creativity is blossoming on TikTok.

It’s (mostly) apolitical

Although politicians are starting to understand the value of TikTok in their campaign strategy, for the most part, TikTok remains apolitical to its users. Content on TikTok tends towards the wacky and the zany rather than the relevant and apposite. If you spend time on TikTok, you’re more likely to see slice-of-life videos and funny challenges than you are to see calls to vote or support certain politicians. That’s what makes creativity so easy on the platform; it’s not geared towards a certain viewpoint or outlook. Tiktok

It’s got a global reach

TikTok is arguably the first Chinese social media platform to truly go global. Many platforms have attained popularity within China itself, but TikTok has found a massive audience outside its native country, and that means creativity is exploding. Think about it: if TikTok has a global audience, then the content uploaded to it has to be fairly universal, or many users won’t understand it. That’s why users are getting creative with TikTok; they need to if they want their content to be viewed by as many people as possible.

The algorithm is almighty

TikTok’s algorithm is very, very smart indeed. It’s a much better implementation of the “recommended content” concept than many of TikTok’s competitors have managed. Videos are recommended to users based on what they’ve watched before and what the app thinks they will like. Anecdotally, it seems this algorithm is correct far more often than it makes mistakes, and that’s part of the secret behind the creative boom on TikTok. Users simply know how to make content that will get them more views.
