Day of Archaeoastronomy 2014 submitted by dodomad : Day of Archaeoastronomy 2014 The aim of the event is the rediscovery of prehistoric techniques to determine calendar dates and to bring objects with an orientation to the solstices and equinoxes to a broader public. Ralf Herold and Dr. Hilmar Hensel write: We, the Archaeoastronomy division of the Sohland/Spree Observatory are organising a ‘Day of Archaeoastronomy’ at the summer solstice 2014. The aim of this event is the rediscovery of prehistoric techniques to determine calendar dates and to bring objects with an orientation to the solstices and equinoxes to a broader public. Anyone can take part.

We would like to invite all institutions, researchers and interested people to participate in this activity, whether at a site near you or as a host in the virtual world. We would be very interested to receive videos and photos taken from sites with an orientation to the solstices and equinoxes We will integrate this material in our presentation about the event on YouTube.

We are establishing a video-conference via the internet at the summer-solstice sunset again this year.

You will need a laptop, tablet or a mobile phone with a mobile internet access for an active participation during the videoconference. The conference will be held in German, Czech and English.

We will publish a YouTube-presentation of the Day of Archaeoastronomy and send a PDF document of the event to all participants.

Best regards,
Ralf Herold and Dr. Hilmar Hensel

Valerie Evans adds:

Last year I took part in a solstice link up between significant sites, The link-up was initiated by the Sohland Observatory in Saxony and involes over a dozen sites in Europe. This will be their third year of doing it and they are very keen to encourage people in other countries to take part.

Last year, at the last moment, we decided to do the link-up so we dashed to Stonehenge and made a link-up with poor sound and a clouded sunset but we will be better prepared this year.

Practical details: I think the initiative is a good one and I will be happy to act as link with the English-speaking organisers.

I provisionally intend to take part at Stonehenge on the 21st, but if others want to use Stonehenge that's great, we do our link from home turf at sites in Wales instead. It is very simple to do: the 'command and control hub' send out the Cisco video software and do a trial run the day before.

Then we all go to our sites and link-up over the solstice sunset. It's that simple. For last year's go to

Anyone who is interested can get involved. Any questions please get in touch. And hope for a cloudfree sunset!

Best wishes,

Val
