Balloons over Bagan (Myanmar 2013)Millennials, also known as 'Generation Y' are those individuals born from 1980 to the 2000s. These individuals have grown up in the technology and internet era. They were exposed earlier in life to digital equipment such as smartphones, computers, laptops, drones just to name a few. To a millennial, success is defined as a great career, perfect health, loyal family and a strong social connection. These individuals are driven and focussed to achieve their needs and wants.

As the adage goes, ‘all work without play makes Jack a dull boy,’ the millennials take this to heart. To them, how they spend their downtime makes a huge impact on how they will achieve their goals. A well-rested body and a re-charged mind are important to enable you to face a task-filled week. Don’t be surprised to find millennials engaging in a pub crawl in London or anywhere else over the weekend as a way of relaxing their minds. There are plenty of activities that youngsters participate in during their spare time such as:

Traveling the World

Travel is important to Millennials as they perceive it as a means of self-exposure and awareness. It’s very easy these days to up and leave at a minute's notice to explore new cities, the untouched wilderness and the pristine beaches of the world. It's easier for this generation to travel because they are flexible and finding accommodation while on the go is much easier than it was.
London Pub Travel for the younger generation doesn’t have to be expensive, contrary to popular belief. It doesn't take much to save for a budget flight or the train and stay in a cozy AirBnB. ‘Timely travel’ is so vital for the millennials. If they spot a famous event happening at the Eiffel tower, off they go to Paris! And of course take pictures and videos for Instagram and Facebook or how else will their peers know that they were ever there?

Eat and Eat

There is nothing that brings people together like good food. Frequent casual dining is paramount to Millennials as it’s a great time to keep in touch and bond with family and friends. Given the hustle and bustles of life, the young generation has taken up to regular group dates, coffee dates and the hospitality industry has taken advantage of this niche. There are restaurants and cafes at almost every corner these days.

With the increasing awareness of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension and the like, healthy eating, vegetarianism and veganism have become much more of a thing. Nowadays more people want eat clean, healthy and organic foods in a bid to stay away from diseases and maintain a good weight.

They say, "Image is everything, being number one is just next to it". Group fitness, yoga classes, aerobics marathon are increasingly popular for Millennials. But not just that, to to specialized exercise regimes that are energy packed and full of adventure. Millennials do a lot to make sure they look right both at their workplaces and entertainment spots.

Dinner with Friends Social media and millennials are like Bonnie and Clyde. ‘digital natives’ as they are sometimes called, spending a large part of their time online connecting with people from all spheres of life. Reports show that approximately 90% of millennials use smartphones with 93% having access to fast internet. How they use their spare time has gradually changed as compared to the earlier generation. Staying connected despite distance barriers is these days essential of course.

Shop 'til you Drop

In the modern world, almost everyone does their shopping online but half as much as millennials do. Surveys show Millennials in particular want goods and services that are affordably priced. Also, the simplicity and ease of online shopping make this activity more of a hobby than a task. Browse sites, compare deals and products. These same individuals will then save up enough money to splurge on days of sales and promotions such as Black Friday, Easter and Christmas.

Explore Hobbies and Talents

Every twenty-something knows the importance of having a backup career or a side hustle, given the uncertainties of the job market. Every other day, there are reports of lay-offs and companies going bankrupt due to economic issues in all countries in the world. The perfect time to explore these talents or hobbies is normally during spare time after work. There are many success stories told of many millennials that changed their hobbies to meaningful careers that have gone on to employ many other people. The most successful of these are entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook or Craig Newmark of Craigslist.

I hope this has been an interesting look at Millennial Culture as future historians might call it. With many thanks to londonpartypubcrawl, Paul Arps, Hitchster and Maggie on Flickr for their kind support and assistance with this article, including Creative Commons photos.
