It is quite telling and remarkable that no one English manager has won the Premier League ever. Since the inception of the league in 1992, no manager of England descent has come out on top of the league, leaving many to wonder about the managerial quality around the country. Even former England stars are not up to the quality, it would seem, given the fact that the last year has seen Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have gotten fired at Everton and Aston Villa respectively. Huge expectations were placed on the former midfielders in the dugout, but they have both struggled under the spotlight in charge of some of England’s more traditional teams.Another English manager in the division is Eddie Howe, who is working wonders at Newcastle, but there’s an expectation that once the big stars start rolling into Tyneside, he won’t be in charge, as a manager inclined to work with big names will be placed in charge, similar to what happened at Manchester City with Mark Hughes, who was let go in favour of Roberto Mancini, who duly went on to win the league and FA Cup in 3 just 3 years in charge. There is another Englishman at Chelsea, Graham Potter, who is under increasing scrutiny in charge of the Stamford Bridge outfit.
He joined the West Londoners in September following the sacking of the much-loved Thomas Tuchel, and despite an encouraging start to life in the dugout, things have unravelled, with the Blues winning just 2 of their last 15 matches. The Blues’ manager won hearts with his style of play at Brighton, and many a neutral English football fan expected him to weave his magic at Chelsea. However, he has taken time to imprint his style of play on his players, and following a massive transfer splurge in the winter, big things are expected of his team, but they are not showing it at the moment.
He comes across as a warm and genial man who looks like he really cares about people, but at Chelsea, he needs to be more ruthless, imposing his will on a set of players who have been embroiled in a culture of player power at the club. English football really needs him to do well, but his 34.6% win percentage does not do him any favours, as the Chelsea hierarchy are under pressure to make changes in the dugout. Things really need to change fast for Graham Potter at Chelsea, or else he will be gone very soon. At that point, even English football neutrals will hold no grudges against Todd Boehly and co.
