Burnham Deepdale submitted by Antonine : Medieval floor tiles (Vote or comment on this photo)
When there are so many inspirational home shows on television, it’s hard to live with things you don’t like. Some of the larger makeovers require loans and may not be suitable for everyone, but there are plenty of smaller projects that can make a big impact.

Painting walls a new color or retiling your floor are two easier changes that can completely change the look and feel of your home.

If you change the walls and floor, all the contents of the room will have new life. You may be just fine with your existing furnishings for a while because the atmosphere of the room has been transformed. You can even move décor from one room to another just to switch it up if you are on a tight budget.

Once you know the style you’re looking for, you want to compile a few design ideas. Pinterest is a great design research tool. There are thousands of boards featuring design ideas with a specific theme. If you’re lucky, you will be able to find out the manufacturer of the designs you like, but that’s not always the case. It depends if the source of the photo is still a live link. Sometimes the images come from blogs and are not connected to a resource for shopping. However, many manufacturers are producing today’s popular designs. If you browse a few showrooms, you should be able to find similar designs.

Some of today’s most popular designs include:

• Wood look – you can find a wide array of shapes and colors made to mimic wood grain, some natural, some distressed, some smooth and others patterned to mimic natural grain. You’ll find variations of wood tile in virtually every new home installation because it works in every room. It’s great in kitchens and hallways – areas that tolerate high traffic. Wood costs have gone through the roof, making wood tile one of the most popular choices.

• Hexagon tile – hexagon shapes are showing up in every size and color. They are especially popular in small tile sheets made for shower and bathroom walls. You can keep your costs down and style high simply by integrating some hexagon tiles into your design.

• Prints – Replacing the once popular mosaic mural above the stove, you’ll now find newer installations featuring bold black and white designs with retro prints.

And where you’ll find tile is also surprising. Many homeowners have been replacing cabinets with simple shelves that are back by wall tiles. Not every kitchen can spare the storage space, so this choice may not be for everyone. You will, however, also find this design feature is popular in bathrooms where it may be more suitable to display décor on the shelves without sacrificing room for towels beneath the sink.

If you choose to install your tile floor yourself, you can save up to half the total cost. With labor costs increasing, many installers are charging more. If you have no choice regarding installation, you can still save money by removing the old tile yourself.
