People were lucky enough to travel the world will tell you that our beloved planet is filled with breathtaking historical sites and wonders. Many of these amazing sites can still be seen and enjoyed today, while there are those, that unfortunately, didn’t survive. There are so many outstanding historical sites in the world, that it is going to be quite challenging to see all of them, but we can but try!

That's precisely why you should write down a list of places that must be part of your bucket list. If you're not sure how to narrow down your options, maybe these suggestions will help you decide where to go next.

List of some of the World's top Historical Sites that you really must see!

Angkor Wat

With its broad trench and castle-like towers, this is for sure one of the most popular religious structures in the world and the most beautiful World Heritage site. The ruler of Southeast Asia's former Khmer Empire, King Suryavarman II, was the one who has initiated the construction in the 12th century. Those who have seen it claim that the Hindu temple complex is even more fascinating when you see it in person, particularly, if you take into account the fact that it is one of the attractions at the UNESCO-appointed Angkor Archaeological Park. Furthermore, the complex consists of various other impressive jungle-intertwined temples and ruins, including a temple that was shown in the Tomb Raider movie that was filmed more than twenty years ago. How can you reach it? The entrance to the park is around three miles north of the center of Siem Reap, and if you decide to see it directly from the Siem Reap International Airport that you’ll be having approximately a ten-minute drive. If you want to properly see every corner of Angkor Wat, then it would be recommendable to hire a tuk-tuk driver who is going to show you everything for only fifteen US dollars.

Stonehenge

This can definitely be defined as a bit of a mystery, because to this day, no one has the full answer to the question of why these stones were placed there, and what's the reason behind it? On the other hand, what we do know is the fact that it is one of the most popular landmarks in the United Kingdom.
So what do we know about it? Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument, located in Wiltshire (England), two miles away from Amesbury. This site went through numerous transformations in the meantime, and it didn’t just start as a ring of stones.

The first stones were raised between about 2400 and 2200 BC. This astonishing historical landmark is something that definitely intrigues a lot of young people, especially children. And unfortunately, not everyone can afford to go straight to Wiltshire. Therefore, if you live near London, yet you want your pupils to get more useful information about it, then you can check out to see whether there are some interesting London school trips that organize a trip, for example to the latest exhibition at London's British Museum on Stonehenge. This is something that will blow their minds away!

We advise you to hurry because this exhibition will run until the middle of July. Once there the kids will be able to see more than 400 objects, for example, the Nebra sky disc that many believe is the oldest illustration of the cosmos. Besides that, they will also get the opportunity to see Seahenge, which represents a wonderful prehistoric wood circle that was situated in Norfolk, the English county.

Machu Picchu

Located in Peru, above the Urubamba River, many claims that Machu Picchu lies in one of the most breathtaking settings in the world when it comes to archeological sites. This ancient city cascades down abrupt walls on every side of the mountain.

Furthermore, these mesmerizing ruins have been re-established and are properly maintained, which is why it is one of the most popular attractions in the world. What's fascinating about it is the fact that (precisely because of the proper maintenance) tourists have a great indication of how this ancient city of Incas looked like during the 15th and 16th centuries when it was occupied.

Visitors from different parts of the world come to Peru mostly because of Machu Picchu, and the entire journey to it is definitely a huge adventure, but it highly depends on the way you decide to reach the ruins.
There are various ways you can do it. If you’re an adventurous type, then you can pick a guided hike and camping trip that lasts several days, or you can opt for an option that’s way less complicated and simply access the ruins by using the bus from Aguas Calientes, which is a small town.

The Pyramids At Giza

Even though they are more than three thousand years old, no one has a clear idea how these pyramids were built, or even how the Egyptians created something that’s so accurate and precise? Several pyramids align with the stars and consist of some chambers that cannot be opened.

The biggest one, also known as the Great Pyramid was made by the Pharaoh Khufu, and has restricted access to it. Furthermore, you will also stumble upon the Sphinx (since it's very close to it), which represents another wondrous historical site whose mysteries still baffle many historians. So what is the best way to see these breathtaking pyramids? Probably the easiest way is to use a bus from Midan Tahrir. Buses that will take you directly to the pyramids are #800 and are the biggest buses. If you decide to opt for a smaller one, its number is 82.

Writing this article was extremely hard due to the fact that there are so many outstanding historical landmarks in the world, that it was hard to single out just a few of them. If you haven’t seen them before, now is the time to change that!
