Saddlin' Mare (Sma' Glen)
Saddlin' Mare (Sma' Glen) submitted by markj99 : Saddlin' Mare (Sma' Glen) stone with a c. 200 lb saddle stone at its base. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Standing Stone (Menhir) in Perth and Kinross. The Saddlin’ Mare is a standing stone 1 mile SE of Clach Ossian in the Sma’ Glen. It is a squat stone c. 7 feet high standing around 100 yards NW of Giant’s Grave (Sma’ Glen) Cairn within 10 yards of the A822 Pitlochry. Its location relative to Giant’s Grave (Sma’ Glen) Cairn may give it some prehistoric significance however there is a more recent tradition concerning The Saddlin’ Mare.

The road through Sma’ Glen is an ancient drove road which may explain the tradition of Saddlin’ the Mare. According to Clifton Johnson, an Amercan travel writer, in Land of Heather (1903) it was traditional for travellers passing through the Sma’ Glen to place up to 3 increasingly heavy stones on the sloping top of The Saddlin’ Mare without them falling off. There is only one stone at the base of The Mare Stane nowadays, however it is around 200lbs so it would certainly be a challenge.
There is graffiti etched into the stone, initials and dates of successful attempts maybe.
