'Clave' type Cairn in Highlands. A passage grave constructed in the "Clava Cairn" style. It lies on the level flood plain of the River Enrick. It was excavated in 1952, when a crouched body was found in the floor of the chamber. It has been restored since then. The mound is built from water-worn stones and pebbles. A kerb surrounds the cairn, giving it an imposing appearance towards the entrance at the south-west. This alignment towards the midwinter sunset is common to other "Clava" passage graves.
The above picture shows the narrow entrance passage (complete with puddle!). The walls of this and the chamber are made with large "orthostats". Surrounding the cairn is a circle of eleven standing stones.
Access: In state care. Easy to find along the A831 in Glen Urquhart, west of Loch Ness. Signposted
The streaks of colour in the standing stones are outstanding (best seen in the hi-res images).

Re: Corrimony (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Saturday, 29 August 2009 | | Andy, The passage at Corrimony is not aligned to the midwinter sunset, nor is it aligned to the setting minor standstill moon. As shown on my CD ebook and DVD, the watchers of the Dawn, It is in fact aligned to where the sun sets in early February and November, which also mark the times of the Gaelic festivals of Bride and Samhain.
