From childhood I've been interested in archaeology and ancient history. I have worked on a number of excavations around Norfolk as well as spending several years leading a fieldwalking team. As an artist, I gravitate towards lifedrawing and landscape, especially historical landscapes and ruins. Some of my work is semi-abstract or moving towards abstraction, while some is more literal, reconstructional art. I'm interested in ways of responding to ancient sites which can go beyond (and add to) the scientific approach of professional archaeology. Which seems even more relevant to the more distant past. But I also just follow wherever things which inspire me lead !! Away from East Anglia, I've spent a lot of time in West Somerset and Exmoor and this is reflected in my work. I like trying to communicate the skills and enthusiasms involved to others. I work with the Sainsbury Institute and as part of the excavation at Warham in 2023 I was teaching children, teenagers and some adults about historical landscape drawing and did a similar thing on a smaller scale at Kett's Heights in Norwich.
