Vendel Period vs. Viking Age<br /> <br /> While the Viking Age (793-1066) encompassed a large region of Europe with diverse raids and trade networks, the Swedish Vendel Period (around 550-800) was more focused on local elites, who nevertheless exhibited connections extending beyond their immediate surroundings. Richly furnished boat graves are characteristic of the Vendel Period; this form of burial was already less lavish in the Viking Age and had given way to other burial practices. During the Vendel Period, the Elder Futhark was in use before evolving into the Younger Futhark during the Viking Age. Here I am standing before the replica of the large Sigtrygg Stone from Hedeby, which was created 300-400 years after the Vendel Period and is written in the Younger Futhark.<br /> My reenactment reflects the graves from Vendel with a focus on grave no. 1 (helmet) and 14 (belt).
