Timber Circles in Dorset, England
4 sites recorded, with photos, maps and visitor reports
Dorset, is widely known as Hardy Country after the famous author, Thomas, but there is of course so much more to this fine county than its renowned authors. Although a much larger county nowadays than in past years, Dorset's importance stretches back well before the Romans, who made use of its strategic position after they finally took Maiden Castle, a 120-acre Iron age hillfort near Dorchester, in AD43.
Arrangements of wooden posts interpreted as being either complexes of totem poles or the supports for large circular buildings. The posts themselves have long since disappeared.
