Another carving outside the Burke Museum. Unfortunately photography inside the museum is forbidden.
If you visit Seattle, you can find examples of Salish carvings, including what we know as totem poles, in various spots around the city. Seattle is proud of its indigenous heritage to an extent we don't see in the eastern U.S.

The movie Whale Rider, set in New Zealand among the Maori, features a very similar image of someone riding a whale. It's fun to speculate on Pacific Rim connections.
