Description
The Pillar of Eliseg near Valle Crucis Abbey (SJ 203445). The last king of Powys had this stone erected before he died in 854. The long and now very faint inscription gives his descent from Vortigern (see Dinas Emrys)

Could be Cefn y Fedw Sandstone or for high fossil content, Sun Bank quarry at Trefor. Incidentally it is almost certainly incorrect that the Eglwyseg valley name was taken from this pillar as the name has a much earlier provenance. Eglwyseg appears to derive from "Glwys" Welsh for Holy and probably a reference to Llanegwestyl, the village/township relocated by the Cistercians to accommodate the Abbey in the early 13C. There is a very clear reason why this valley was "holy" of which more when I have written up my research!
