Even though Medieval you can just picture the much earlier Iron Age promontory fort especially with those earthworks standing out so well in the low light.  The hill on which now the castle stands commands the River Tywi estuary. The hill would have been stripped of trees so that foot soldiers were vulnerable to attack by archers.  A dramatically placed castle, but then again, most are.
