Description
This slab is displayed on a niche/shelf in a passage in the modern vestry and ‘chapter house’ block on the north side of the chancel. It is recorded as Ryder's Monkwearmouth 3 and Fyson's 3 (1957, after drawings by CC Hodges). It is "an almost complete slab of yellow-brown sandstone, 0.74m x 0.29m x 0.26m. The design is incised except for sunken panels in the cross head, which is an unusual variant on the common bracelet theme, with a circle enclosing the head centre and overlying the bracelets. The shaft (which still shows its central setting out line) rises from a peculiar mount which is closer to two-thirds of a sphere than the more usual semi-circular form". Dated to the late 12th or early 13th century.
