Description
Maasai Gong Rock and a Serengeti vista
Site in Tanzania

photo by Charles G. Summers Jr.
Maasai gong rock at Moru Kopjes in the Serengeti. It is said that the Maasai used the gong rock as a method of communication, to summon tribal members for a gathering/ceremony. It is covered with pits made by banging a small rock on this large rock, perhaps over 8 feet wide and four feet high. This rock made music as the sounds were wonderful. The bountiful plains of the Serengeti can be see from this vantage point.

The name Serengeti comes from a Maasai word, siringet, which means endless plain. Inspite of this work, over two thirds of the Serengeti is bush or woodland.

The Serengeti was recognized as special and declared a Game Reserve in 1929. Tanganyika, the old name for Tanzania before unification with Zanzibar, declared it a National Park in 1951.

The pastoralist Maasai that lived in the Serengeti were relocated early on by moving into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
