Description
It's always a pleasure to find something prehistoric going on somewhere when you weren't expecting it. That was the case at Old Wardour Castle. Having had a lifetime of driving past, and having enjoyed it as one of the locations for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, I got to visit on 30th March. We enjoyed the castle, and loved the grotto. It wasn't until a few days afterwards we found the grotto has a story to tell.
There WAS quite an extensive set of standing stone, complete with a cove. The stones from this were moved from Place Farm, Tisbury, to make a grotto for Old Wardour Castle, nearby, in the 18th century, by Josiah Lane of Tisbury (the contractor). They can be seen (in disarray) at Old Wardour Castle (English Heritage site)
