Excavated: 2007
Firstly, archaeologists excavated 2 small trenches around the Cuckoo Stone to see if the stone was in its original position; results showed the stone had been moved in antiquity. Excavation then examined the surrounding area adjacent to the stone.
A large number and range of archaeological features were revealed within this trench including, the original stone socket for the Cuckoo Stone, 2 Neolithic pits, and 3 early Bronze Age urned cremation burials.
A possible Romano-British shrine, a second possible Romano-British structure, as well as a number of large Romano-British pits show clearly that even when toppled from its original setting, the stone remained a powerful focus in the landscape.

Thanks for that info Feanor. If I'd known about the Romano-British shrine at the time I might have done some dowsing! We're looking for something similar in the 'nymet' area near Bow in mid-Devon.
