St Tudclud (Penmachno)

The Carausius Stone dates from the 5th century and commemorates Crair or Caron, a 3rd century Irish shepherd- boy who became king of Ceredigion in Wales. He was honoured by the Britons as a hero who stood up to the might of Rome. Carved on the stone is the Greek chi rho cross - the Greek letters X & P forming a four-rayed cross. The Latin inscription is: CARAUSIUS HICIACIT INHOCCON GERIESLA PIDUM or 'Here lies Carausius in this heap of Stones'. Carausius or Caron is also regarded as a saint. His name is recalled at Tregaron. St Tudclud (Tyddud) is an obscure dedication.
