Description
Luath's Stone in Aberdeen shire at NJ641149 is on the other side of Green Hill from Whitehill Stone Circle.
It is an impressive standing stone - some ten feet tall with the broad sides facing East-West.
The West side supports some amazing lichen - proof of the air quality!

From the County Archeologist
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding the standing stone called
Luath's Stone.
This stone is said to commemorate Lulach, King of Moray, a stepson of
Macbeth; killed near Rhynie in 1058. It is in a prominent position, yet in
a poor one if it represents the remains of a stone circle. Its sheer size
also suggests it is a commemorative stone and not merely a boundary stone.
The name but not the tradition is known locally.
Apart from the above we have no further information on this stone.

Whenever a megalith acquires a nickname and some kind of story is attached to it, you can be sure this will have nothing to do with the origin of the stone. It may well be that the name "Luath's Stone" has been attached to it in commemoration of King Lulach - but that does not mean that the stone itself was erected in his name.
