I used to live across the field from these stones. The nearby village, Clifton, is steeped in history being the site of the last battle fought on English Soil, December 1745. There are many stone circles and other similar sites nearby - for example Long Meg, near Little Salkeld (about 6 miles NE), Moor Divock (about 5 miles W) and more stone circles near Shap (about 8 miles S). Wetheriggs Pottery (about 1 mile E) is a steam-driven pottery which is interesting. Clifton is well worth a stop off if you are travelling long distance south on the M6 - leave at junction 40 and take the A6 south, and then rejoin the M6 at junction 39 at Shap.
