Description
Still another element of the complex at Oley Hills, Berks County, Pennsylvania: a squared-off boulder wedged between the halves of a rounded split boulder. The boulder is large--those trees behind it are not saplings.

Known as split-wedged boulders, these constructions, though usually much smaller, are common elements of stone sites in the northeast and mid-Atlantic states. Theories on their significance vary. On the Oley Hills site are many flashy examples of elements and features that appear in smaller size and subtler form at sites throughout the region. Along with being an extraordinary site in its own right, it serves as a collection of structures to look for when identifying sites.
