Description
The Itzamatul temple pyramid.
This is another of the great structures of the ancient plaza of Izamal. Three construction phases have been identified with it: the first building was the base graded with a stairway on each of its sides. Its bodies have a slight slant and its corners were rounded. It was constructed around 600 CE.

The second building completely covered the earlier one causing the rounded corners to disappear and lifting the walls vertically. Apparently, it had only one staircase on the western side, which has been restored. Its construction can be dated around 700-850 CE.
A third stage was constructed around 950-1150 CE, of which only a large base remains, more than 100m on each side and a small staircase lying on its side.

According to historic tradition, this building was dedicated to the god Zamna, to which many pilgrims came from far away places to seek favours.
