Description
A large stone circle that is situated on Elva Hill, hence the name. Comparable with Castlerigg due to its large size and mountain vistas this would've been highly consecrated ground. The views are amazing on a clear day but the circle or remaining stones are not, having lost over half its stone count and those that are remaining are very small or have fallen. These early stone circles are believed to have enclosed religious gatherings but it may have served different functions during its use from worship to funeral ceremonies, possibly even astronomical alignments as it had supposedly and outlying stone (now lost) to the south-west that may have been used to align the circle to the winter solstice sunset?
