There is a legend of how the grooves were made in the stone, which were actually made by centuries of erosion.
The story is that the Devil tried to hang his grandmother but she struggled so hard that the ropes cut into the stone. When she broke free he tied her to the next stone. This continued until he ran out of stones to hang her from.
