Built 1420. Perched high above the old town. Corte is in the centre of the incredible, mountainous island of Corsica.
Named 'Kalliste' (The Beautiful) by the Greeks in the first milennium BC.

I've put this pic into Photographers Gallery / History / Europe as it didn't belong with the prehistory photos... unless I can be persuaded otherwise ;)

Thanks Jim. The citadel is 15th century, built on a Roman, and possibly pre-Roman fortress - but the history is not well documented (as you will find if you raid the web)

Corte is a fantastic place, the views from the citadel are absolutely stunning - this is a great picture, and transported me back to Corisica for a moment, so thanks Ethelwulf!
