Description
Displayed on a shelf/niche in a passage in the modern vestry and ‘chapter house’ block on the north side of the chancel, this is recorded as Ryder's Monkwearmouth 10, also Fyson no. 11 (1957, after CC Hodges' unpublished drawings). "The upper part of a slab of yellow-brown limestone, 0.51m x 0.37m. Bracelet-form cross carved in relief within a sunken circle, the bracelets having unusually wide openings … this may be an Early Geometric piece" and is dated to the early or mid-12th century.
