This is Monkwearmouth 15a, an original part of the Abbot's Seat, recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 15a-b (Displayed behind glass in the Exhibition Centre - not much room between the cabinet and the wall to photograph it properly!). It is described as a 'lion in an architectural cage', meant to be seen from the side and the front. Dates to the last quarter of the seventh century.
