Description
August 2019. The re-erected, but damaged neolithic menhir seen from the South. It has been found during roadworks in 1982 and the larger fragment has been re-erected in 1986. The smaller part is presented just beside it in the same concrete foundation.
Prehistorian Otto Gödel reported in Mitteilungen des Historischen Vereins der Pfalz Bd. 96. (my following translation is not exactly literal): during earthworks for the new route of the federal highway 271 in 1982 settlement pits of the early Rössen culture have been found in a plot called „Im Oberen Winkel“ […] The tombs that belonged to this settlement, had already been discovered 550m east in 1881 and excavated afterwards. The missing "cult stone", which belonged to the settlement as well as to the burial ground was found at a little distance. On November 3, 1982, construction workers found a large stone broken in two parts. The stone was not of a local material hence it is quite likely that i has been the neolithic standing stone of this settlement. It was smashed and buried at some time.
