Description
This stone, on the western side of the row of three crosses displayed in the south-east chapel, is described by the accompanying notes as: "This is the base stone of a great cross which must have had an exceptionally large shaft. Anglo-Danish c 900/1000 AD. Carving of coarse inter-lace pattern is typical of the period. Was formerly in this church yard as noted in various archaeological guides to Yorkshire. The rough base was inserted in the ground.”
