Pole Hill is high for Essex - 300ft!  The hill and its neighbours were made from the terminal morraines of the last glaciation and mark the most southerly limit of the ice.  Palaeolithic and Mesolithic man lived in the Lea Valley below.  The obelisk marks the Greenwich Meridian - almost!  It was just 19ft out.

Tell us more, Bear. By the way - apparently the obelisk was correctly placed on the meridian - but then they moved the meridian!
