Please note the alignment between the stone and the tor shaped mountain peak in the distance. At one time these two objects interacted with one another to promote a heaven and earth balance. The cup marks are sockets for Gnomon sticks and wooden shadow casting structures. Basically, this is a clock. The religious ritual was simply to meditate on the moving shadows and light beams, perhaps while vocalizing to drum beats. If you look carefully you can see crescent shaped light and dark areas in each indentation and a cross shaped pattern just to the left of the three central cup marks. IF the stone were to be set flat , and assumng the trees were not blocking the alignment, this stone would act as a perfect sighting stone for sunrise or sunset or even moon and star motion as the earth revolved.
