Description
Drombeg Stone Circle, Co. Cork (W247 352):
One of the better known stone circles in Ireland, Drombeg is exceptionally well preserved and is one of the best known examples of an axial stone circle in Ireland. It is characteristic of several circles in the area around Ross Carbery, consisting of seventeen stones forming a circle just over nine meters in diameter. The tallest of the stones are a pair of portal stones, some two meters in height, which are directly opposite the recumbent stone. This cup-marked stone has a flat upper surface and is flanked by two stones graded and shaped for size. The axis of the circle runs from north-east to south-west, thus providing an alignment with the mid-winter sunset.

I was at Drombeg in April 2003, and it is magnificent in its energy and in its presentation. I have longed to go back ever since the day I was there. Beautiful photograph!

How can you be from Cork and not know of the stones there! We had a wonderful week there, and saw *loads*. Just check out the OS map for the area, many are marked on there.
