Description
FPM08 Petrie - Beads from Dynasty XII
UCL Petrie Museum, Bloomsbury, London, England, UK.
View on black
The Petrie Museum houses the collection amassed by Flinders Petrie (1853 - 1942), the eminent historian and archaeologist who was the first to systematically catalogue ancient artefacts. On the negative side, Petrie was a fan of eugenics, was affiliated to far right wing politics, and was anti-democratic.
The museum named after him was established in 1892 and now contains over 80,000 objects. from Egypt and Sumeria. During my visit an electrical fault meant that only about half of the items were illuminated. These photographs were all taken with available tungsten and fluorescent light through glass. (Windolene and duster at the ready)
