Description
Temple of Khnum
Aswan, Elephantine Island.
N24.08419, E32.88660
Built about 1490 BC during the new kingdom.
Khnum (aka: Chem, Kemu, Khem) was the Ram Headed god of Nile Flooding, and husband of Satet with the same functin who has a temple 100 meters to the north.
The picture shows the massive courtyard which originally had a colonnade. The entrance would have had pylons on either side. This site also survived relatively unscathed until about 1830 when Mohamed Ali leveled the place in order to build a fort that never even got started. Archeologists replaced some major blocks but did not have enough to do more. 2 smallish obelisks survive in the Nubian Museum across the river.
There are no bridges across the Nile in Aswan, except for the 2 dams, so visitors should use the many feluccas and motor boats to cross the river. This costs the equivalent of about 1 GBP per hour.
