Close up of the lettering on its western face: LC (and DC on its eastern). Still trying to find out what it stands for.

A photograph of the stone on Geograph, taken by friend from our archaeology group (Andy C) wrongly says the lettering reads 'CT' and 'DC' on the different faces, CT standing for Crewe Trusts, DC for Dean and Chapter (of Durham). Curious.

Stones on Dartmoor sometimes have carvings that denote which side is in another parish boundary.

Hi, Angie, Many thanks for the comment. We definitely know this is a boundary marker. Given the parishes are Edmundbyers and Hunstanworth, the LC and DC lettering is somewhat confusing. Someone, somewhere will know, I'm sure.

On the old map it shows several lead mines in the surrounding area. It couldn't be the initials of names of two major lead mines, could it? Was there an old word beginning with 'C' for a mine??

Ooh, now that's a thought. Many of the old mines and workings are just marked as disused lead mining works, no name, on the OS Map I have, anyway. Well worth looking into, as soon as I get time to call up the old OS maps online. It might even be worth us making a trip to the Lead Mining Museum near these stones to ask if they know. In the meantime, if anyone out there has definite information, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thank you, Angie!
