weird, now I realized the first time that the shaman/priest/god is sitting in the half lotus position... cool, perhaps there was a cultural-religious connection with the early buddhists in the east.

I've seen a Buddhist monk in 'jump' from a full lotus and descend with his legs in that position, but he wasn't holding anything in his hands. The symbolism of what the figure on the cauldron is holding is rather lingam/yoni.
On a more lighthearted note, I've also seen Riverdance dancers' legs in that position ;-)
