Carl Bjork's Rock Art Site  Popular
Created to share Carl's personal insight and research into the "rock art" phenomenon of petroglyphs, pictographs and geoglyphs. I took a few photographs and pondered the strange carved lines; but it was not until later looking at my photographs that I asked myself, "WHY"? Why there and not on the other close-by rocks...WHAT was the motivation? I was hooked, the journey began to answer, the WHY.

England's Rock Art  Popular
Amongst the outcrops and boulders of northern England keen eyes may spot an array of mysterious symbols carved into the rock surfaces. These curious marks vary from simple, circular hollows known as 'cups' to more complex patterns with cups, rings, and intertwining grooves. Many are in spectacular, elevated locations with extensive views but some are also found on monuments such as standing stones and stone circles, or within burial mounds. The carvings were made by Neolithic and Early Bronze Age people between 3500 and 6000 years ago. The original meaning of the symbols is now lost but they provide a unique personal link with our prehistoric ancestors.

Leo Pertoglyphs  Popular
From the Ohio History Site: "Perched on a ridge just outside the village of Leo, Leo Petroglyph & Nature Preserve is a legacy of the American Indian peoples of ancient Ohio. Protected beneath the roof of a shelter house, a large flat sandstone slab preserves the traces of some of the most remarkable rock art in Ohio. The panel of petroglyphs includes between 37 figurative drawings of humans, birds, animal and human foot prints, a fish, a snake and other figures carved into the rock outcropping on the gently sloping hillside above a steep gorge. Leo Petroglyph is actually a series of petroglyphs ancient people cut into the sandstone outcrop. The exact age of the carvings is unknown, but based on the degree of weathering of the soft sandstone, the carvings are probably not more than 1,000 years old. The art is likely the work of the Fort Ancient culture. Leo Petroglyphs and Nature Preserve is managed locally by Friends of Buckeye Furnace, in care of the Jackson Historical Society."

Stans Beckensall's Top of the Rocks  Popular
Stan Beckensall is a retired head teacher who has a passion for local heritage. In the 1970s, he developed an interest in rock art and since then he has devoted much of his time to finding and recording prehistoric carvings, particularly in Northumberland, but also in County Durham, Cumbria and Scotland. His numerous publications testify to the extent of his enthusiasm and, for many years, these were the only available material on rock art in England. His fieldwork has produced an immense archive of notes, drawings and photographs, and these formed the basis for the Beckensall Archive of Northumberland Rock Art. In these short clips you can here Stan talk about some of his favourite rock art panels. Click on each link on the page to hear the audio.

The Ancient Carved Stones of Checta, Peru  Popular
CHECTA, PERU - Near the quaint village of Santa Rosa de Quives two hours northeast of Lima, Peru lie the phenomenal archaeological site of Checta. A Quechua word meaning "one of many," Checta is home to hundreds of pre-Incan carved petroglyphs. This ancient 5,000 years old site once encompassed a large lake and temple complex buried for eons under a landslide high above the valley. In one dreadful moment back in 1925, hundreds of ancient carved stones were revealed when a deadly avalanche stormed down the valley killing 14,000 people. The day we arrived, we were introduced to Doña Consuelo Livia, an 88-year-old great grandmother known as the "Protectress of Checta." She has devoted the past 60 years of her life to the preservation of the site. Consuelo happily greeted us, eager to share her stories.
