Having just returned from Nairnshire and Moray I must say that I found, in some instances, that 'accessing Scotland's past' can be very difficult indeed - circles of standing stones, like those at Auldearn and the nearby Templestones, in private gardens and blocked to the public. Just south of Auldearn an ancient motte is being bulldozed flat courtesy of Auldearn Quarries PLC, and between the motte and the Auldearn circle (which is in the garden of a private lodge house) a cairn and stone row is buried in tangled undergrowth and would need a machete to clear it.
This motte and cairn/row lie in the 2 miles or so between the Moyness circle and that in Audearn and seem to be part of the same complex, hugely ignored and partially destroyed. When I get my films developed I intend to to do a full illustrated article about being unable to, in this instance, 'access Scotland's past.'
