In 'Wainwright in the Valleys of Lakeland' (Mermaid Books), the late, great fell-walker, country lover, and author says:
"....the Kinniside Stone Circle alongside the road attracts attention: I could never understand why it was not indicated on the maps of the Ordnance Survey, usually so meticulous about antiquities, until reading that it was a fake, put there by a local schoolmaster and his pupils to emulate the works of their ancient forebears."
If Nicola's and Threlkeld's info is correct, I wonder who told Mr. A. Wainwright this story?
