The stone is about nine foot tall. It is near the top of a hill and can be clearly seen for miles around through about 330 degrees. I suspect that the stone was placed for orientation purposes - its distinct shape provides precise information. The surrounding land is rich in neolithic finds. Simple tools mainly from native materials - sandstone and granite - though the local museum has fine flint pieces. A cist (contents now in Edinburgh) was found near the stone; though it is probably later.
