Re: By Tree, Stone and Spring. Part Two by mishkin on Sunday, 01 January 2006

Levity aside, you can't argue with the fact that we are a "mixed" race.. Bath as an example of Roman conquest, still displayed a strong celtic/native tradition in its recognition of religious gods.
It seems that a strong fight was put up in the south west, Bath itself only having late roman villas, which meant that it was an imperial estate for a long time. This probably means that the yoke of colonisation meant the local population was enslaved, or at least bonded to servitude in some form so that the building of Aqua Sulis could go forward. One thing is always striking about this area of the country though, is the amalgamation of native tradition into roman temples, and also at a much later date, the overthrow of roman influence (probably seen in the decapitation of roman gods) The "Celtic" head at the Baths, moon and sun representation, Uley Bury Temple, Pagan temple, Lydney with its dog worship, and Caerlon also.... and it has a good saxon overlay!

Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
