Researchers at the University of York and Curtin University in Australia used Isotopic "fingerprinting" to match the stones to Brimham Rocks, 11 miles west, not Plumpton as previously thought. Brimham is a notable landmark.
The rock analysis also conformed that the medieval cross in Aldborough commemorating a1322 battle also is from Brimham and is very probably part of the devil’s arrows. The cross used to stand in Boroughbridge market place, but was moved to Aldborough in 1852.
