The island was known as Ennor but by Tudor times only Tresco and Bryher (of the present islands) remained joined. Samson was separate by the 1100s and so too was St Martins (then known as Nurcho). However it was still possible to walk between St Martins and Tresco and between Tresco and St Marys on very low tides up until the 20th century, although the water might be up to your neck. Charles Thomas's book 'Exploration of a Drowned Landscape' (Batsford, 1985) is the best work to date on the subnergence of Scilly.
