Wayland, the legendary blacksmith, viewed from above strapped into the flying device he made to escape his imprisonment. This is one of five or six Viking Age Insular carvings of the episode - all in Yorkshire. The others are on fragments of stone crosses in Leeds Minster skfb.ly/oPKGN , Leeds City Museum skfb.ly/oPC8X , York Minster Undercroft Museum, and Sherburn skfb.ly/oPTo8 and skfb.ly/oPUBS . This is the only example of Weyland on a hogback gravemarker.
