Field archaeological work in 2013 uncovered an large pre-mound midden deposit. One of the layers produced one of the largest assemblages of artifacts (primarily Mississippian period pottery) recovered from any pre-mound deposit as well as two radiocarbon dates. These dates are relatively consistent, suggesting a 14th century date for the pre-mound activity that took place here. The mound was built soon after the construction of this layer.

This mound has a long history of archaeological investigation, starting in the early 20th century. For more, including maps and supplementary information referenced in this article, see:
